Orchids 1 - Anthropomorphic Orchis
Some of the most charismatic orchids belong to a group of Orchis species that characteristically resemble miniature human or simian figures. This feature has led some orchid enthusiasts to christen the group "Anthropomorphic Orchis" - a most appropriate name!
One of my more memorable orchid photography sessions, way back in the 1980s, involved an early morning visit to Kent woodland for the Lady Orchid. Having been unexpectedly entertained by a badger family at first light, I had a morning of perfect weather and a stunning range of varied plants to work with. Ever since, I have retained a special affection for this group of rare and attractive orchids.
The promiscuity of these Orchis species yields some interesting hybrids that swell the variation already present.
This gallery displays some macro photography aimed at revealing the anthropomorphic form, as well as some more conventional single plant, whole spike and group portraits.
The close-up images have a semi-abstract quality that generates attractive and interesting prints.
