The Green Winged Orchid Anacamptis morio takes its common name from the prominent green lines on the flower's hood. The majority of plants produce purple flowers but the species is noted for its tendency to throw up colour variants that can be especially attractive.

Until recently, this orchid was classified under the Orchis genus but it was moved to become Anacamptis morio on the basis of new DNA-based molecular taxonomy.

The Green Winged Orchid is found on old established meadows and it can generate spectacular large populations. The plant in this photograph from a small Norfolk colony.
