This variant Bee Orchid Ophrys apifera var. trolii is often referred to as a Wasp Orchid, reflecting its narrow elongated lip. The variant crops up occasionally in several UK counties and has been recorded in the Avon Gorge, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Dorset and Suffolk.
John Spencer published an article in the Journal of the Hardy Orchid Society highlighting the fact that whilst broadly similar, Wasp Orchids in separate populations can be quite distinctive. This probably reflects their origin as independent mutants.
This photograph was taken in a small but persistent population in Warwickshire.
